The Bitcoin community is at odds over a looming update to the network’s reference software client, which introduces a highly contested change. The Core V30 update will raise Bitcoin’s OP_RETURN limit, enabling transactions to carry larger amounts of non-payment data.
Advocates of the change argue that it enables users to attach extra data to Bitcoin without clogging up the system. Critics argue that it opens the door to abuse, and shifts Bitcoin away from its intended purpose as a medium of exchange to a data-storage network.
