The hardware wallet manufacturer has confirmed reports of an LTE implant in wallets sold by a Southeast Asian reseller, while a European reseller has halted sales.

Hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger has confirmed reports that devices sold by Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis have been compromised. Its Donjon security team reported Monday that it had found an unauthorized component implanted in a device sold by CryptoBilis, which could read recovery phrases as they are entered and transmit them over LTE using a provisioned eSIM.
While Ledger hastened to assure customers that its wallets’ Secure Elements were unmodified, the compromising of its supply chain sparked alarm. Ledger also stated that it was reviewing reports that a modified device had been sold in Germany, halting sales through European reseller MediaMarkt Saturn.
Other hardware wallet manufacturers have raced to reassure customers, with Trezor stating that there was “not a single piece of evidence” that its own devices have been compromised, and slashing its network of authorized resellers as a precautionary measure.
