His reasoning is that the proposed change would set a dangerous precedent by using consensus to invalidate currently valid, fee-paying transactions, and that the network can’t differentiate between spam and legitimate data embedded on the blockchain, since it “cannot read intent.”

The dispute has drawn dividing lines in the Bitcoin community between those who argue that it would reduce invalid non-financial data clogging the chain, and those who believe it would reject valid transactions and could split the network.
