Out with a whimper? ๐ฉ
Billionaire investor Jeremy Grantham sees crypto fading away in the years to come, citing Bitcoin's wobbles as a store of value.
๐ What you need to know
Billionaire investor Jeremy Grantham made his crypto skepticism crystal clear in a CNBC appearance Friday, calling Bitcoin and crypto a "useless, speculative mechanism." He doesn't see it going out in flames, either, predicting it will fade away "not with a bang, but with a whimper" over potentially decades ahead.
His main beef? Bitcoin's unreliability as a store of value. He pointed to its 52% drop from an all-time high of $126,080, even as gold notched new records and economic conditions stayed relatively strong. "People don't use it to make serious trades, they don't use it to buy their dinner," he said, adding that in his view, its main use is helping criminals move money without leaving a trace. He did, however, give blockchain a partial pass, suggesting it could still play a role in finance in the future.
