Coinbase is fighting hard for digital privacy laws.
The San Francisco-based crypto exchange has signed onto an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to hear Harper v. O’Donnell. The case calls into question how the third-party doctrine should be applied in the digital age.
The doctrine, dating back to the 1970s, holds that individuals lose their expectation of privacy when they voluntarily share information with third parties like banks, phone companies, or, in this case, crypto exchanges.
The main thrust of Coinbase’s argument is that users should not have to surrender their right to privacy because they store information with a third party.
