Is today Satoshi Nakamoto’s birthday? Nobody knows for sure except the person or people behind the pseudonym—but some Bitcoiners celebrate the day.

The Bitcoin inventor put April 5, 1975 on his P2P Foundation profile years ago before disappearing, which means today would mark the 50th birthday of the creator if it is indeed his birth date. But there’s reason to believe that the date was picked for its historical significance in the realm of financial freedom.

On April 5, 1933, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102, which required all Americans to turn in their gold coins, bullion, and certificates to the Federal Reserve. Americans didn’t gain back that right until Congress passed legislation at the very end of 1974—so you could call it 1975.

Did Satoshi pick the date to send a message, or is it just a coincidence? Whatever the case, it’s a good day to celebrate Bitcoin—especially given how well the asset has held up in recent days as Trump’s trade war tanked the stock market.
