Anthropic released its most powerful public model, Claude Fable 5, this week—and almost immediately the AI community was up in arms.
Their objections? The Mythos-class model burns through tokens like they’re going out of fashion, forces users into a 30-day data retention policy—and, most damningly for researchers and open-source advocates, secretly self-sabotages for certain research tasks. They took to social media to castigate Anthropic as “anti progress and anti safety,” and using the model to “stifle their competition.”
That data retention policy also hits European companies, which operate under GDPR rules, consigning them to a “permanent underclass,” users complained.
Meanwhile, the firm’s CEO Dario Amodei said that AI is getting too powerful, just after releasing… a powerful AI model. Entirely coincidentally, as Amodei touts the “lightning pace” of AI development, the company is also gearing up for its IPO. Funny, that.
