Ethereum is gearing up for its biggest overhaul since 2022’s Merge. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin released a roadmap to “Lean Ethereum,” billed as the third major iteration of the network that will replace “almost every major piece of the protocol” over the coming years.

Big changes include the use of recursive STARKs to verify a compact cryptographic proof of the chain rather than having every node re-execute every transaction, as well as simpler consensus and multidimensional gas pricing.

But the headline concerns are those around quantum security and privacy. Buterin pushed preparation for Q-Day up the agenda, with work on quantum-resistant “blobs” already months along, and defined privacy as a “first class goal” for the network.

With the Ethereum Foundation having recently cut its staff and tightened its budget, it’s a doubly lean Ethereum that sets off on Buterin’s roadmap.

Nearly every core piece of the protocol will be rebuilt over three to four years, with quantum safety and privacy moved front and center.
