Dogecoin might have started off as a joke, but it has provided serious gains to some investors and is one of the biggest cryptocurrencies in the world.

And while it may not command the same kind of fervor as Bitcoin mining, DOGE mining is starting to attract more and more participants. That’s according to hardware makers and industry experts that Decrypt spoke to at this week’s Mining Disrupt expo.

Although the event was largely centered on Bitcoin mining, a massive industry with many publicly traded players, there was an undercurrent of interest in mining alternative proof-of-work coins like Dogecoin and Litecoin—which can be “merge mined,” or mined together for double the potential rewards.

Dogecoin mining isn’t big business yet like Bitcoin mining—not even close. But just as some true believers beat the DOGE doubters by investing early and reaping sizable benefits, now there’s a growing wave of Dogecoin miners who see an opportunity.
