A rift has opened in the Bitcoin community over a proposal to change the network’s consensus rules. BIP-110, a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal, would temporarily restrict several methods used to embed arbitrary data in Bitcoin transactions if implemented.
For supporters, the proposal would reduce blockchain spam, reinforcing Bitcoin’s role as money. But critics argue that it would reject valid transactions and could split the network by setting a precedent for future protocol changes. Jameson Lopp weighed in earlier this year, arguing that BIP-110 “signals that the protocol can be altered to censor subjectively ‘undesirable’ transactions, eroding its image as permissionless programmable money.”
The dispute dates back to the launch of Ordinals in early 2023, which ramped up demand for Bitcoin block space and sent transaction fees spiraling. Critics have argued that inscriptions exploit the Bitcoin network, describing them as spam. Previous splits in the community have led to forks of the Bitcoin network, spinning off Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin SV—could BIP-110 follow a similar trajectory?
