A “big announcement” is coming regarding the U.S. strategic Bitcoin reserve, White House digital assets adviser Patrick Witt told a panel at the Bitcoin 2026 conference this week. Witt added that the Trump administration has spent months “figuring out” the legal interpretations needed to protect Bitcoin on the government’s balance sheet.

It’s more than a year since the president issued an executive order creating the U.S. Bitcoin reserve, initially to be capitalized using criminal and civil asset forfeiture proceedings. But plans have stalled in the face of Treasury’s policy of not purchasing additional Bitcoin, with the executive branch lacking the authority to buy Bitcoin on the open market without congressional appropriation.

Meanwhile, Rep. Nick Begich (R-AK) plans to reintroduce Senator Cynthia Lummis’ BITCOIN Act in the coming weeks as the “American Reserves Modernization Act,” aiming to “lock in the gains” of the Trump administration’s pro-Bitcoin stance and prevent future administrations from reversing the policy.
