Coinbase executives long insisted that there were no token plans for Base, the exchange’s popular Ethereum layer-2 scaling network. But amid a crypto-friendly shift in U.S. regulatory policy, Coinbase has changed its tune.

On Monday, Coinbase executive and Base mastermind Jesse Pollak said at a network event that the firm is “exploring a network token for Base”—to rapturous applause from attendees. He added that it’s “early” and that firm plans have yet to be pinned down, but for Base builders and users, a token could be a massive value-add.

"Yes, Base is exploring a network token, but has no definitive plans," the official Coinbase account on X noted. "We’re exploring how a network token could help us accelerate our joint mission."
